Yeats among School Children

West Cork Education Centre, in conjunction with Yeats 2015, the Department of Education and Skills and the Association of Teachers/ Education Centres in Ireland (ATECI) organised a art/writing competition and book project for primary school children, Yeats Among Schoolchildren.

This was one of the many events taking place in 2015 in celebration of the 150th anniversary of the birth of the Nobel Prizewinning poet, WB Yeats.

The purpose of the competition was:

To raise awareness among primary school children and their communities of the poetry of WB Yeats
To promote access to, and enjoyment of the poetry of WB Yeats
To enable pupils to understand the language and imagery used in the poetry and promote greater literacy skills
To encourage the pupils to use visual arts and literacy to express their reaction to and understanding of the poetry of WB Yeats
We ask participating schools to encourage children to discuss the competition at home further assisting in raising awareness of the poetry of WB Yeats.

This project involved the following:

An art/writing competition with prizes for winners in each Education Centre catchment area. The winners’ work will be collated to create a children’s book inspired by the poetry of WB Yeats.

Children were invited to illustrate or write a poem based on one of William Butler Yeats’ poems selected from the following 2 titles: The Ballad of Father Gilligan or The Stolen Child .

The competition was divided into four age group categories:
Pupils from Junior and Senior Infant classes
Pupils from 1 st and 2 nd classes
Pupils from 3 rd and 4 th classes
Pupils from 5 th and 6 th classes

Yeats 2015 is Ireland’s national and international celebration of WB Yeats, funded by the Department of the Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht as part of the official Decade of Commemoration. Full details of the event are available at www.yeats2015.com.

Congratulations to all the schools that entered this competition.
