Learning School Project

THE LEARNING SCHOOL PROJECT

 POST-PRIMARY SCHOOLS

The Learning School Project, funded by Teacher Education Section of the Department of Education and Science, is an action research project undertaken by the Education Centres in Cork, West Cork, Kerry, Limerick and Clare.

The project seeks to:

  • develop an increased awareness of what constitutes a learning school
  • support school-based activities promoting the on-going development of the learning school
  • enhance the capacity of individual teachers to contribute to the learning school, and
  • nurture teacher leadership in schools.

The Learning School Project Phase 1 took place in 2007 – 2008 and involved fifteen schools in one central hub, the collaboration of four Education Centres, Cork, Limerick, Tralee and West Cork and the support services, SLSS, LDS, SESS and SDPI, under the direction of Dr. David Tuohy, Academic Advisor to the project.

Beara Community School were actively involved in The Learning School Project Phase 1 (LSP1)


The Learning School Project Phase 2 took place in 2010 -2011, involving twenty seven schools working in five hub centres across the region, the collaboration of the Education Centre Directors and the Professional Development Service for Teachers (PDST)

St. Mary’s Secondary School, Macroom, Co. Cork

Maria Immaculate Community College, Dunmanway, Co. Cork

Kinsale Community School, Kinsale, Co. Cork

Colaiste na Toirbhirte, Bandon, Co. Cork


The Learning School Project 3 was approved by the DES in 2011 and schools across the region are actively engaged in school self-evaluation together with the support of their local Education Centres and PDST Personnel.

The following schools from West Cork who engaged in LSP3:

– Kinsale Community School

– Coláiste Ghobnatan, Baile Mhuirne

– Mercy Heights Secondary School, Skibbereen

The Learning School Project  Phase 4 was approved by the DES in 2012 and schools across the region are actively engaged in school self-evaluation together with the support of their local Education Centres and PDST Personnel.
